Calculators in General
On July 4th 2016, it has been 15 years since I started TI calculator programming, starting with the TI-83+ then eventually moving up to color Z80/ez80 and HP models, using BASIC language through my entire programming career except in 2010 and for a brief period of time in 2013. Shortly after starting programming, I began working on a bare-bones RPG with graphical dungeons but menu-based battles. Shortly after the creation of Omnimaga (which celebrated its 15th birthday on September 1st of this year), the RPG, which was originally called Labyrinthe des Illusions (often nicknamed Labyprog) eventually evolved into a fully-graphical game that ultimately got renamed to Illusiat.  Although that particular game was plagued by severe balance issues and lasted less than an hour, it spawned a series of 13 JRPGs for the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus series, 11 of which are still available in completed form, and several remakes.




Tonight, it's the original Illusiat's turn to celebrate its 15th anniversary! Illusiat 2 and 3 were also released in 2001, while Illusiat 4 through 12 came out in 2002. A pseudo 3D game called Illusiat 2002: La Quête Ultime, was in development in early 2002, but was lost in a memory clear (except the title screen logo, which was later re-used in the PC version of Illusiat 5) along with the first four games. Illusiat 1 through 3 were remade identically from scratch. Remakes of the first four games were released in late 2003. The Illusiat 4 remake remains the only version of that game still available for download, as the original version was never remade. Illusiat 5 first came out on Windows instead of calculators and was a point-n-click game rather than a role-playing game, but in early 2003 it was ported to the TI-83 Plus series. Illusiat 6 was ported to the original TI-83 in 2003 and was the second Illusiat game to be translated in English after Illusiat 3. The rest of the series was translated in 2005 (including a second translation of Illusiat 6). Illusiat 11 was re-released in 2007 with higher difficulty, as Kin Master Quest. In 2008, a TI-81 remake of the original game was released and later ported to all Z80 models for posterity. That remake was notorious for its extremely high difficulty and for being the only TI-81 game to ever make ticalc.org headlines. In 2009, the original series was rebooted, with Illusiat 13, but at 90% completition, the project was put on indefinite hiatus. The entire Illusiat RPG collection was featured on ticalc.org in 2013.

Although Illusiat 1 through 12, as well as the 2003 remakes, suffers from dated programming practices and rebutted many players due to most of them having ASCII-art sprite graphics, the latter games in the series features unusually elaborate ASCII-art animations and amount of features per calculator RPG standards despite some of the latter games being developed in about 2 weeks. As a result, the series eventually gained a cult following that lasted for years. This Youtube playlist features footage from many of the games.

Those who likes browsing through old forum topics might have noticed that in larger sub-forums, there were a lot of topics with broken icons, no title and empty "last post" information at the bottom of each page except the first and the last. There were also plenty of topics at the top (or sometimes the entire page) that were not ordered properly, rendering certain topic list pages unusable. If you browsed the forum as guest, those topics showed an unclickable title saying "(Awaiting approval)" in italic letters. To alleviate the problem until a solution is found, we set topic listings to 100 topics per page instead of 50.



This was due to a bug with the topic cloning plug-in we have used for over a year, which allows a topic to appear in more than 1 sub-forum. The bug was fixed a long time ago, but for some reasons, uninstalling the buggy plug-in version left some code behind, which went unnoticed until a new version of that mod came out a few days ago. The offending bit of code was removed and it seems the problem is gone now (it is unknown if it will come back if we have posts awaiting admin approval, but under such situation the issue would most likely be much less severe than it was). As a result, we have reverted back to 50 topics per page instead of 100 and older post lists should be easier to browse now!

Calculators in General
HP has released firmware revision 10637 for the HP Prime. Besides some new feature additions such as being able to use a picture as graphing background and improved on-calc help, this new OS is said to improve stability and possibly fix the problems encountered in the previous firmware. This firmware was leaked by accident a week ago and later removed, but has since been re-instated.

However, backup all your data and projects before upgrading, because this firmware update in particular will format your entire Flash memory, possibly to ensure a full cleanup from potential hazardous issues left behind previous firmwares.

Notable Game and Software Releases
Those who want to program in TI-84 Plus CE BASIC language with the help of ASM/C libraries to enhance the language will now be happy: A few months after @grosged released Sprites v3.3 library, which lets you use 36-color sprites, text and rectangles of any size in your games with very decent speed, Ricsan from TI-Planet has now released an utility for the PC to help you convert your sprite sheets into Sprites v3.3 format!



Until now, you had to use SourceCoder or another image to hexadecimal converter in order to convert each of your sprites one by one, then manually edit the hexadecimal using find/replace for when you wanted to use a different color palette. While this was feasible, it was tedious, especially considering there was no bulk sprite conversion available. It seems like this problem might now at least be partially solved, with Ricsan's utility, which supports bulk sprite conversion! Before using it, you still need to convert your image file into 36 colors, so if you are not tech-savy about what image editor can achieve that, then you might still be out of luck, but it should hopefully speed up development considerably.

Currently, there are four games that use Sprites v3.3: Wal-Rush! CE, Desert Bus II, GalagACE and SokoMario. The library supports scaled sprites, but they take more RAM since they are stored in their scaled form rather than scaled each time you draw them.
